Why is this film so fucking good

I haven't watched it in years so I can't speak to quality, but I really loved the setting, and the scene on the playground was fun and comfy.

Plus Munchlax was really cute and funny

It had everything young me loved to see in a Pokemon film.

It was honestly the last Pokemon film I fully enjoyed before the movies started slipping in quality.

The Keldeo movie was actually painful to sit through. I had to force myself to finish that garbage.
None of the Pokemon movies are particularly good though, they're all just advertisements. Even my childhood favorite, the lati@s movie, was pretty disappointing to rewatch. Only good things were the locations and music.

The only movie I was surprised by was Victini, which was weirdly really fucking fantastic by Pokemon movie standards

Really? I watched the Victini movie a couple of years ago and it seemed pretty atrocious.

I watched it soon after watching Hoopa, and while it wasn't as bad as the Hoopa movie it was still pretty awful. You're right though, the quality-standard for Pokemon films isn't high in the first place.

Maybe I was in a good mood when I watched it, but I really enjoyed it. It's been more than 6 months, so I may not remember everything.

Interesting opening, sets up the plot and 'bad guy'
The starting tournament shows us the city and whats at stake if the sword thing destroys everything. Getting to know the setting and people was a real breath of fresh air after a lot of the previous movies were just glossing over that, making it feel like nothing was at stake, not this time though.
The actual villain was doing something he thought was right, and the conflict with his village (?) and family and main characters was enjoyable to see.
Victini didn't talk which was a fucking godsend and the dragons were pretty cool, handled well.
The gimmick with two movies was minor but nice for those who want their favorite leggo to be the key.
Maybe I was just easily impressed coming off the dreadful gen 4 movies but this one I thought was definitely the best Pokemon movie

The first half is fine, but the Legend battle is nothing but a series of explosions and 'lol, hero Ash' after the characters you actually want to see are shoved into the background.

The movie starts out fairly slow and just jumps into the island shit with barely any warning or proper build up. The animation now had sequel disease in that it didn't need as much effort due to the first existing so they cut corners everywhere.
