I kind of get gastly being a gas cloud but haunter and gengar convey their poison typing terribly. My only guess is that since poison was kind of the "bad guy" type in gen 1 they felt it was fitting of ghosts.

Not my favorites ghosts, or even top 5, but as our first ghost line I appreciate them not being your simple white sheet ghouls.

I never actually liked Gengar. Probably my least favorite ghost type behind Pringles jellyfish.

But literally within the first twenty minutes of SM I got a shiny ghastly, my first ever shiny since I started playing at RSE

It's such a goddamn shame it's actual shiny is barely anything. Especially with how muted the 3d colors are.

Nobody is carrying ghost resists with the way the meta currently is, which makes him incredibly difficult to switch into. Even massive special tanks like Celesteela and Magearna will get dented severely if they attempt to switch in to check him.

It's because the meta is filled to the brim with Fairy, Bug, and Fighting, which are all things Gengar resists and all fuck Dark in the ass.
There are only 5 ghost resisters in the entire tier, and one of them loses to Gengar anyways.
