You could say I'm just petty, but I don't like both. I do save a lot of Moon x Lillie images, because they're cute, but I only really like Sun x Lillie. It doesn't make sense in my head for the protagonist to be female.
I have seen this mentioned before, but SM story was a lot like FFIX's. A sheltered princess who runs away from her crazy mother and meets a foreign boy, with the boy willing to do anything to protect the girl, and they both go through a lot, and ultimately fall in love. It doesn't make sense to me if they're both girls.

I'm usually against the idea of Lillie ever becoming a really strong trainer when she's just playing around with Pokemon. I feel that would be unfair to other rivals like Bianca, Serena or Hugh, who try their best yet don't make it to the top.

Lillie seems to have the same role as her in-game counterpart. That's good. Instead of the protagonist from Kanto, Sun, the one who helps her out in the beginning is Moon instead. That's good too, I guess. Though I do feel a bit disappointed that Kusaka seems to be having Sun only interact with Moon.
Gladion is also here. They didn't cut out the Tapu Koko saving the protagonist event and Lillie isn't a battler.

Since Moon saves Nebby too, I'm not sure where this will. Will Nebby end up liking Moon? But if that's the case, what's with the cat theme of Sun's team? Wasn't it because Solgaleo would fit in there? I guess it's too early to say for sure. I wish it wasn't monthly.

As for Moon, I still can't say I like her. Even in this chapter, all she's done is react to things around her. Her personality is still just as bland as a dialogue-less protagonist. I'm hoping this involvement with Lillie will help with this.

Personally, I think it's okay for protagonists. Most of the time, Training Pokemon and aiming to be the Champion is literally all they care about. They go on to pretty much fight all trainer in the region and most of the time don't show any signs of weakness when it comes to training. The aforementioned rivals, you pretty much use them as stepping stones to rise above.
Lillie just doesn't seem like someone capable of that. I guess it's a subjective thing.

I've finally completed the story in Moon just moments ago. My god, I don't think I've ever felt as attached to a Pokemon character than I have with Lillie, and it made her departure really heart wrenching.

I don't find him ugly, I just find him incredibly bland without any distinctive trait(s), and he is too replaceable due to this. Yurifags aren't any better really, and if I HAD to choose one of the NPCs around her age to force her to be with rather than journeying on her own, I'd actually choose Hau, since none of the trial captains make sense. People meme about the fellow and his snacks, but outside of that, him, Gladion, and the protags are her only similarly aged friends, and Hau shows that he at least cares for her as a friend, unlike the emotionless, cardboard faces of both protags.

And I wasn't really talking about the ships, again, but I'll reply to that because you seem to want to talk about it. Yes, Hau cares for her as a friend, but he cares for literally everyone. Even Team Skull.
The protagonists, despite your claim about them being "emotionless", build their entire journey around Lillie. The one they show the most interest in and care for, risking their life for her on multiple occasions despite not having any reason to. Their entire goal in the game is to protect Lillie and they get stronger for that purpose only. And unlike with Hau, Lillie is shown to care back equally. She trusts them completely and totally, especially after you save her and Nebby after they're kidnapped. Before that, she was shown to be a really scared girl, but afterwards, when you help her out even in her hardest moment, she gains complete faith that nothing will ever happen to her with you around and is always smiling.

I ship her with protagonist because I think it's the ideal outcome for Lillie. She lost her father, her mother became crazy trying finding him, her brother abandoned her and ran away. The only people even close to family she has are Kukui and Burnet, and in future, her starting a new family with protagonist, the one she's shown to care about the most, seems like a perfect outcome to me. That's my ideal ending to her story. This is the only time I've ever given any shits about the protagonists, and that was only because of their development with Lillie.

The thing is, despite people assigning affection (which I suppose is the definition of shipping), the protagonist doesn't actually do anything to imply romantic intent, just a sort of friendship that is only present due to the track of the story focusing on Lillie. I chose Hau because he specifically was the only one to actually get emotional over her when she left, and the only one her age that said he would contact her while she traveled. The protagonist was an afterthought to her though, and needed to at least show some actual interest in her other than the plot revolving around her caring for Nebby, which needed the input of someone competent in battle. Like I said, they feel interchangeable, like they could be replaced with anyone. I suppose that's the goal, so that people can insert themselves into the story, but I don't self insert, and as such, I enjoy seeing her either making her own way, or establishing a relationship with a character that explicitly shows an actual interest in contacting and keeping a connection with her, even far away.

Now that you bring it up, I want to point out that Link, in his series, is shown to care for the girl.

For example, Skyward Sword. The entire point of his journey is to rescue Zelda. And his motive is believable because he is shown in almost all the cutscenes involving the two of them, and some of them he is by himself, to care for her. Be it by facial expressions, actions, etc. And all that, without uttering a single word. Maybe a grunt, or a yell here or there, but that's it.

Now in SM, the problem the protags have is that they're cardboard cutouts. They almost never emote, and never do so when they're with Lillie. They always keep that psychotic smile on their face. When Lillie is leaving, according to the game, they've connected with her, but fucking Hau expresses more emotion than them. He is the one who's crying and griefing, not them, when they should be, according to the game.

Tl;dr the difference between Link and the SM protags is that, even though all of them never talk, Link expresses his emotions. The SM duo don't.

But that's exactly the relationship between Lillie and Hau.

I can understand wanting to see the player show more emotions, but when Lillie left, everyone, including Lillie herself, was smiling and overall happy. The protagonist and Kukui cared for Lillie and seeing her go on a journey made them happy. This is the case with everyone in Pokemon world, except Bianca's dad. Everyone is always happy when they see someone close to them go on a journey, so I thought that scene was perfectly fine, other than protagonist not even waving their hands and Hau crying. Those were two annoying parts.

You say that they could be changed for anyone, but that's not the case. It's not anyone. It was those characters, in that setting and with those relationships. The goal could be anyone. Even if it was just friendship that led the protagonists to care so much about a stranger, that friendship was a lot stronger than the one between Hau and Lillie.

It feels to me that you're just favoring Hau. Hau likes Lillie, and is thus perfect for Lillie, even if Lillie and protagonist like each other, but that doesn't matter because protagonist didn't show facial expressions. That sounds a really inconsequential thing compared to the action of protagonist in the entirety of the game. Hau also liked Gladion, and they both had a lot more moments together than Hau and Lillie. Not implying that they should fuck, but just pointing out how little Hau actually interacted with Lillie.

I don't even get the arguments and fan wars between Sun and Moon being with her, because story wise, they're the same character and as such, the only time it even matters is in material such as doujin, which I have no interest in.
