OP here, that's what this run was along with the one I posted in the OP. I've basically reset myself back to 0 restricting myself to only using Pokémon that were introduced in the region I'm playing through. Not picture are an Ampharos who helped me with Kanto and a Shuckle who helped me with Johto.

Fortress has been surprisingly decent actually, it has a really large type coverage with Gyro Ball/Earthquake/Giga Drain/etc. It's pretty fun.
The biggest shock to me is Dunsparce; getting that early turned the game on easy-mode for me. Never did I expect it to be that good.

Maybe I got a shitty one but he let me down big time
Constantlt one shotted and he was far too slow to do much to anyone

I like to stick to a "new pokemon for that gen" rule for my first playthroughs to keep things nice and fresh.
For example, Togekiss is ok for HG but not Platinum since it's just an evo of an existing Pokemon.
