It wouldn't necessarily even be the same generation. The term generation refers to the set of Pokemon, does it not? So by introducing a new set of Pokemon it becomes a new generation, even if it were to re-use a region for example.

Such a game is a possibility - though a VERY unlikely one - because patterns mean nothing, hell Game Freak have even said before that they try to break patterns to keep Pokemon fans surprised. I wouldn't consider it likely because it seems like a poor business practice to basically re-release SM, but it's not completely outside the realm of possibility.
