Putting aside the first 7 that involved Violas Gym and Ash/Serena's past, the first real hype episodes for XY were Ash VS Diantha, Korrina being shown, and Milliefeui's first appearance.

That was about 20 episodes in when we got that news.

Tapu Koko VS Ash 2 is going to be the turning point I believe hope for SM. Everything has been introduced, the school, cast, trials, and Aether/Skull has been foreshadowed.

Things should get more exciting soon. When Gladion, Lusamine, Guzma, Plumeria or someone of that nature gets teased or revealed to actually appear in an episode then things are going to start returning to normal excitement levels.

XY didn't have anything to worry about since BW was before it and everything became hype and good. Because it is, after what we got in XY SM is a disappointment given what we could have had. But SM is its own thing, its fun and enjoyable and a new take on the series.

The animation sequence is the exact same as activating Synchro. Rapid cuts between Ash and Greninja/Ash and Pikachu. But the Ash/Pikachu version is a lot more uninteresting due to the low quality and speedlines used.

I think Rockruff will be similar to Pikachu but closer to Rowlet.

At home and at school it'll walk around with him like it currently does, but on trips into forests, caves or whatever we'll see it in its Pokeball similar to how Rowlet is either in his ball or in the backpack.

The one thing SM has done exceptionally well is making Alola feel "whole". Its an island, and seeing background characters, Pokemon, and the people going about their lives is fresh compared to the unimportant characters we've had filling the streets in past regions.

Litten has a life outside of Ash.

Rowlet, while with Ash, stays true to its character and naps in the bag, his pokeball or wherever it happens to be.

The same with Rockruff, it currently stays at the lab when Ash and Kukui head to the school, it joins them on adventures like at the beach and has its own goals.

It's a part of the cast who has lived on the island longer then Ash has. I can't see it being confined to a Pokeball unless Ash is Island hopping or doing something that doesn't require it to be out.

If he's hanging out in class, at the lab, on the beach, at a store or something I'm fully expecting pupper to be around.

If Ash was kept as a Protagonist but became the Champion of a region, what would you have Ash do after that? personally I think Ash having a stint as a Pokemon Ranger and future seasons involving him battling the evil team(s) of the latest generation would be a cool format, it would certainly excuse Ash going around helping random people since its his job and his companions each generation would be new rangers or the player characters that Ash would coach in their training.
