It's a Stall Pokemon that came out when Stall was universally hated due to overcentralizing the metagame (Gen II). It was the next best thing if you didn't/couldn't use Blissey, since due to being a starter it was VERY easy to acquire compared to Chansey.

Gen III onwards, power creep allowed many Pokemon to do its job but better. Doesn't help that Grass is a shittier defensive type than it used to be due to Flying and Bug getting so many powerful moves. Even though it dropped in usage to the point of never being seen in competitive again, the bad taste still lingered to the point where most people hate it for the sake of hating it because they forgot what it was originally hated for. People still hate Blissey for the same reasons, which is noticeable because Blissey is still competitively relevant.

It's not good competitively, but hating it is a meme. I personally love its design.

It honestly feels like everything changed along with the times except Meganium and a few others because Game Freak.

It's honestly one of the most forgotten pokemon out there in the sense that Game Freak doesn't really do or can't bother doing anything about it.

Shame, because it was a great starter back then along with my Togetic and Ledian.

It sucks because it's a defensive grass type with poor stat distribution (more of the stats needed to go into HP and its defenses). Right now it can barely survive long enough to set up Leech Seed.

Because it is trash ingame and competitively. The early game for GS is very grass unfriendly. And it being shit competitively is obvious. So there is nothing for people to latch onto. Typhlosion was an ingame god in gentoo and Feraligatr was great ingame in the remakes. But Meganium never shines.

Typhlosion didn't get a mega. But it's superior to regular Charizard, as it can switch into fire attacks without harm, and its movepool is...sort of okay, although it lacks some move it would benefit from.
