I've never done any sort of competition, so I didn't know how it worked, but apparently you can only be matched up with other people doing the competition at the same time. Garchomp would be the obvious answer here, but most teams expect it so you need to know how to play it safely. Lightningrod Marowak-A also works, and you already have Gastrodon. Kartana could even work in that regard. Dealing with Tapus in general, Garchomp, Celesteela and Trick Room teams are more of an issue than plain old electric types

But the fact this guy has been pretty much running the virtually same team since the very beginning of this year and has stuck with it every game making small incremental modifications to it as he goes along instead of bouncing around every fad every few weeks.

He's pretty much made that team his own and as the year goes on he will have a massive advantage as he knows his own team and his matchups like the back of his hand.

This guy is pretty much the posterboy of slow, steady and consistent in the same way the Japanese players tend to be.

What exactly are you having trouble with? I know for me my issues are Celesteela and Hard TR, so something that can help deal with those would be where I'd change up.

Trick Room can be played around with by either stopping it from getting set up, reversing it, or not minding it being up in the first place. You have Taunt on Mandibuzz for the first catgeory and Gigalith is one of the fastest mons on the field in Trick Room, plus you have Fake Out pressure from Salazzle.

Having your own TR setter might not be a terrible idea, though. A previous version of my team had P2 over Kartana, but I dropped it because Fini and assorted faststuffs was kicking my ass.

How does draw work at vgc?

I just had the most hilarious battle, where it was my Nihilego against the opponent's Golisopod. He sucker punched into my protect twice. Since the third protect was almost guaranteed to fail he attacked me normally, so I outsped and ohko the Golisopod.

Thing is, Nihilego was at 1 hp and had life orb. So both pokémon died in this last turn. I thought it was going to be a draw, but game says I won. What gives?

So how bad am I if I ask for injections of a team that someone else made because I want to enter a tournament in two weeks?

Whatever Pokémon faints first in a "tie" loses. In your case, Life Orb self damage activates after the fainting animation of the opposing Pokémon, so your Pokémon wins the battle. If I recall correctly, recoil moves work like this too. Stuff like Rough Skin and Iron Barbs procs before the defending Pokémon faints, and the attacking Pokémon will faint first a result, meaning tie goes to the defense.

There are ties in VGC but it's all but impossible to achieve. You have to have pretty much the exact same team and time out with exactly the same HP on every single one of your Pokémon to draw.

Trick room is pretty common at the moment so you need a team that can deal with/take advantage of that. You should also have a way to beat rain (usually golduck+pelipper) and sun (torkoal+lilligant) even though they're less commonly seen now than they used to be.

If this is your first team playing VGC then practising with a pre-made team or at least some pre-made sets is generally suggested (you can copypasta on showdown or QR scan) until you get more comfortable with the format and can make a team that would fare more reliably.

I built this, and it was working fairly well in the beginning, but I was just getting stomped by Muk, so I replaced the Milotic with a Garchomp (and since it wasn't working well either, I swapped him with Whiscash since he's the only Water type that learns Earth Power), which lets me counter Muk, but I just get stomped most of the time. Can you give me some advice on what to replace? I feel like Bulu and Whiscash are by far the weakest links.

What's every Pokémon that's been considered the "M-Kangaskhan of 2017" for just a week or two? That one Pokémon at any time which people think is definitely going to be the single dominating threat of the year? Not like Garchomp or Muk who's always just kind of there but never top, or Golduck who shot up in usage but only from "obscure" to "niche", but the Pokémon that shot to the top then kind of stumbled down a bit?

For the role it was in, (set up a screen or whittle away at things with nature's madness/thunderbolt) not too bad. One thing that didn't work as planned was sky drop + z-conversion, but that was more because porygon-z is so frail. Overall I think it's definitely worth a try; thundurus in vgc11 was primarily used as a special attacker at first

Generally they're either gonna be leading with smeargle or clefairy. Lead with something that can taunt and something else that can OHKO it. If it's EVO boost, then having something with roar can shut down the typical clefairy+eevee lead. Curse is also an option as seen in one of the regional challenges, although that's only after the follow me user is taunted. Sticking Curse onto something puts a four turn timer on it and it gets passed along if the thing setting up baton passes.

A problem I see with your team is Porygon-Z probably struggles to get Z-conversion off safely without any redirection or fake out pressure. If Porygon-Z isn't the core of the team with the other pokemon added to help it out it generally doesn't work too well.

What was wrong with garchomp? It would probably need Groundium Z to do much to opposing muks, especially with your own grassy terrain up. I probably wouldn't recommend Whiscash.

If your core is the first three Pokemon I'd focus on adding others which complement the first ones well, covering their weaknesses and possibly resisting moves from common threats (like having a flying-type/levitate user to switch nihilego out for). Another thing that's worth considering is adding a Pokemon that could take advantage of trick room because at the moment your only way to deal with it seems to be roaring the setter which isn't super reliable.

How long should I try out a pokemon before I decide it's not working? I replaced scarf garchomp with mudsdale, both mainly for muk. I haven't used either very much, but when I did, they weren't very useful. But already I feel like I want to switch back to garchomp, because it had more success than mudsdale. Maybe change up the item though.

I've seen groundium z gyarados as well. I ran into someone who made it so his arcanine did just over half health to muk with a flare blitz so he could 2hko without triggering the berry. But again, I'm using a set I found on trainer tower, one of the regional top cut players muks.

It works any time you get "but it failed".
Interestingly, Protect is shown to fail if everything else on the field has already used Protect or Switched, which means if Marowak is the slowest thing on the field, it can get the boost that way.
The main reason people use it is just for the accuracy though, moves failing is pretty rare.
