So, is eevee supposed to be a dog, cat or a fox or what?
>>31828188
Eevee is a Pocket Monster.
>>31828188
a cute
>>31828188
Yes
>>31828188
a quadrupedal mammal
It's a Pokemon.
I think you newgenners are missing the point of Pokemon actually being fictional creatures instead of just cartoon versions of animals.
>>31828188
It's not meant to resemble any particular animal; it's just a cartoon creature that has traits of dogs, cats, foxes, and rabbits.
This is meant to reflect Eevee's unstable genetic code and its multiple different evolutions.
>>31828188
It's an animate paintbrush (look at the tail!)
That is why it evolves into so many things
Because art is versatile
So is slowpoke supposed to be a pig or a hippo?
>>31828188
Is it a gorilla arm dragon?
>>31828277
Its a Hippo + Otter hybrid. Surprisingly, someone managed to compare it's line with Oshawott's very well.
>>31828188
So, are the Nido's supposed to be rabbits, porcupines, kaijus, or what?
>>31828614
The Nidoqueen/NidoKing line is based on the kaiju
Baragon.
>>31828188
All three.
Eevee is an Eevee.
If you want to get anal about it, he resembles and was inspired by foxes, who are closer to cats than dogs.
>>31828917
Foxes are related to dogs
>>31828188
Eevee is a homage to the Fox Squirrel from Studio Ghibli that debuted in 1984. Hayao Miyazaki based his creation on the Fennec Fox.

Thus, one can extrapolate that Eevee is also a Fennec Fox. Most of the "old guard" in Japanese forums know this.

A rabbit

Foxes are known as "The Cat-like Canine" in academia.

>foxes, who are closer to cats than dogs.
Wrong, foxes belong to the Canidea family, but they're in a different genus (Vulpes) than dogs, wolves, and coyotes (Canis).
All of the members of Canis can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, while foxes can only breed with other foxes.
>>31828376
Pretty sure it's a hippo salamander
I prefer designs like these, where you can't clearly define the object of inspiration, to those that are just animals with a few design elements slapped on top. They don't really make them like that anymore.
>>31828917
>foxes, who are closer to cats than dogs
Good job failing elementary school biology.
>>31828964
>Canine in the title
wew lad
>>31829024
I think you were replying to another poster. I was only refering to the foxes' cat like behaviour. I know that foxes are caniformes in the vulpini tribe.
>>31829077
Foxes are one of those niche adaptors, right? They exist in biomes that don't have a feline predator so they evolved to fill that niche?
>>31828994
That's because they're the niche adapters of the Canidea. Vulpes evolved in environments where there was no major Feliforma animal to fill that predatory niche. Much like how Hyenas are Feliform predators that fill the niche left by there not being any major Caniform predators in their environment.
>>31829251
Foxes are literally dogs that act like cats due to them filling the same ecological niche. The foxes' feline similarities are a result of convergent evolution, where two species look similar because they occupy a similar ecological niche and/or habitat. (Sharks and dolphins provide a good example of convergent evolution. They look very similar but aren’t related. They have evolved the same basic body shape because it works very well in aquatic habitats).
Foxes exist to fill ecological niches that would normally be filled by felines.

Note: I am not poster >>31828917
I did not mean to intervene and inadvertantly start a flamewar.
>>31829379
So, yes to my >>31829251 post, right? They seem cat-like only because they're filling the role of a cat in a biome?
I didn't think you were >>31828917; I was just asking for confirmation as to why they have cat-like behavior...
20 years and Eevee is still the cutest Pokemon.
Why did their cute game fail so hard?
>>31828188
>dog
>cat
>fox
What? It's an Eevee.
>>31829484
Yes you are correct. Foxes evolved traits of felines to replace their role in a biome via convergent evolution. I apologize for any confusion.
Two books/sources that explore this phenomenon:
1) Red Fox: The Catlike Canine by J. David Henry
2)Owls Aren't Wise & Bats Aren't Blind by Warner Shedd
Gen 1 was the best at making actual believable creatures that weren't just cartoon versions of animals.
To this day nobody knows what the fuck specifically Bulbasaur or Nidoking is based on. And it's great. Now we just get cartoon animals.
>>31828952
That's cool as fuck.
>>31829842
I never thought of this. That's true.
>>31828188
Yes
>>31829842
Nidoking is based on Rabbits and Monsters/Kaiju.
Bulbasaur is a Toad with a bulb. Are you serious right now?
Mm hmm. Pretty much.
>>31828188
Both.
>>31831887
>>31829842
Shut down within minutesNido's will always be best rabbit
>>31831887
I can see Nidoran m/f as rabbits but the evos never really gave that vibe.
>>31829842
Yeah, I still can't figure out what Pidgey is based on, anyone have any ideas?
>>31832100
Post a bird that looks exactly like Pidgey. I'll wait.
>>31832100
Pidgey and Spearow are based on the red oni and blue oni from Japanese folklore, hence Spearow's name in Japanese (Onisuzume)
>>31832142
>>31832346
Name?
>>31832522
It's a color edit of a Blue Jay, I think
Ironically more colorful than Pidgey despite it being real
>>31828188
It's whatever it needs to be, dumbass.
That's its entire point. It's the EVOLUTION pokemon.
>>31828277
>>31828376

Its a hermit crab
