I honestly think it's in that unappealing valley between trying to look goofy/cartoony and trying to look badass but not really excelling at ether. A lot like Lucario really. I think the Y mega helps a bit by making him less of a tub of lard, and giving him nicer wings. Fuck the stupid X design though.

I still don't understand how fat Charizard is. In some arts, it looks really fat. In others, like pic related, it looks pretty fine. In anime, it looks fat at times, okay at others. In sprites, sometimes it looks fine, but in the 3D model it is kind of fat.
I know not all Charizard will have the same proportions. Some will be fatter than others, like people. But still, this is pretty inconsistent.

Either way, I love it. You cannot not love dragons, and Charizard is one of, if not the best looking European Dragon. Mostly because of its simplicity and red color. It can look cute, cool or ferocious if need be.

I had no big opinion of it prior to Generation 6. I thought it looked good, but that was it. But then it looked so fucking awesome in Origins, and it's Megas are really fucking fun to use. My favorite Pokemon now.

I might be the one of the few, but I prefer Zard X's design over Zard Y. I love Zard Y wings, I think they're awesome, and I like it's not as fat, but other than that it's just basic Zard. Zard X changes that I love the black and blue colors. Just looking at those colors eases eyes. The blue flames also look really cool. Though I dislike the shoulder spikes. Not the spikes themselves, but how they were handled. Two spikes would've been okay, but four of them was going a bit overboard. It also shares Zard's fatness, but other than those two, it looks great. I think just the colors and flames alone make me like it more. The positives outweigh the negatives for me.

I have huge troubles making a good OU team for Charizard, help me.
I tried many combinations, but the only thing that felt good with him was Tapu Fini, for obvious reasons, but Mystic Terrain is a like a double-edged sword (reduce his own STAB). I can't even decide basic shit like either sticking with Dragon Dance + Roost, Dragon Dance + 3 Attacks (Generally with EQ, because Thunder Punch ended up with the targets that don't resist surviving and fucking me on the ass anyway) or Swords Dance + Flame Charge. Whatever I try, it feels lackluster, I want help with both forms. I Tried Unaware Clefable with sp. def but it was shat on with the new threats. Fuck, I need serious help!

Eh, Charizard is overly simple for my tastes. The eternally burning flame is the only interesting aspect of it's design, and even then at this point that's been done to death as a lot of Fire types are just "creature with X number of flaming body parts." Nothing is wrong with that inherently as flaming body parts are usually cool. There should be some sort of organ or orifice on the end of it's tail spouting the flame, instead the tail tip itself is just aflame.

My main issues is that it's rather portly and it's wings are far too small to support it. Dragonite takes both of those and turns them up to 11, so I have to give Charizard credit for being more reasonably proportioned.

It could really use more details as well, some spines, frills, whiskers, fur and some kind of definition or impression of scales would really help. It's parts are usually a single color, (very common for gen I designs,) and it comes out looking very unnatural as a result. At least some horizontal lines going down its underside as most reptilian designs have.

What makes (many, more so earlier 'mons) the character designs so appealing is its simplicity. Not having frivolous bits and pieces sticking out to make it "unique" and instead having every important detail be a significant part of the character.
This was a necessity on the Gameboy, 'cause there were only so much space (both screen real estate and memory) a sprite could take up before looking like a jumbled mess. Hence the fairly uniform colours & few small details.

It's almost a shame that Creatures inc., Game Freak, whoever designs them now doesn't have the same sort of restrictions now. Now we have things like Hoopa Unbound and nigh on every mega. Charizard might of been more to your taste originally if not for limitations if megas are anything to go by.

It's not a T-rex. The round, jutting out belly doesn't show "strength". It just looks bad. And short arms of a T-rex makes sense, because it didn't need those. It would most only use its mouth. That isn't the case with Zard.

Didn't mean to imply that I want Charizard to have scales, spines, frills, fins and fur, but simply pick one or two of the above, use them sparingly and you're good. It already has two spines, two are horns and one on each wing as a single "finger/claw," but even those don't have a claw tip at the end as a detail, it's just uniform orange like the rest of it's body.

A frill down the back of it's neck or around it's neck/jaw and some horizontal lines down it's belly and it's already got a lot more definition. A lot of the gen I designs are overly bland to me. Red version was one of my first games over and while I've got strong nostalgia for them I can see past the goggles.

There's no doubt that gen I design philosphy tended to prioritize simplicity, a lot of designs had more of a "Disney" vibe like Old Sonic and Mickey.

But then there are outliers such as Kabutops, Scyther and Gyarados who are crazy detailed relative to most of the first generation. I love their designs but they don't quite fit in with the design philosophy of their time, (I suppose Scyther at least has "generic reptillian face" like a lot of gen I.)

Relative to the spheres with faces and Kirby limbs glued onto them, Charizard is a very creative design. Still a bit too simple for my tastes.

Mega X and Y are kind of strange. Generally cool, but trying too hard in a Digimon-esque way.
