Anime made him cuter.

They were so poorly handled, Trevor, Tierno, etc.

Tierno could have maybe attacked every once in a while instead of just Swords/Dragon Dancing, Trevor should have had ridiculously strong Pokémon when you fight him and maybe offer a post-game side quest where he trades you Pokémon you don't have in your Pokédex yet. Shauna should have had more character flaws and overcome them, and Serena/Calem should have had a harder time coping with the fact that they suck at battling.
