When they stay over 24 hours in the spring their happiness goes down and you get that message.

I find it much easier to just get happiness berries from the tree on Route 10 and plant them on the berry isle.

Date change glitch doesn't work with happiness. I believe the glitch makes them stay for way longer than 24h which reduces it to 0

how many berries do you need to max happiness?

23 with soothe bell for most pokemon (base 70 happiness)
hatched pokemon need slightly fewer and some like type:null need 28 or so

I think it's a handful less than 50 at most. The pelago glitch can get you that many easily
