The original series has always been bad.

It has some of the worst animation, and battles in the series, while also managing to have tons of unneeded filler episodes which are their just to cash in more money.

Don't even get me started on the way ash "wins" his Gym battles

The original series is better than anything after it because there was actually some semblance of humor and the characters weren't sanitized cardboard cutouts.

The writing felt better for a while there. Not so much repetition/monotony in those early plot lines

And then we get the Monster of the Week and Team Rocket filler shenanigans and it becomes pretty much garbage.

Of course, I loved cocky, shit talking Ash. He flips his hat backwards and goes into wacky ass situations.
Modern Ash is just a goody two shoes, not as naive and more "confident" in some sense, instead of saying "Darn, it didn't work" he'll just say "eh, I've been cucked by the League multiple times anyway." His defeatist personality makes it even worse because apologists will fence up this as a lesson for children that you can't win everything.
