Honestly though, if we're still wishing, I'd like to see what Game Freak can do with anything besides gyms. Trials were interesting, but I wanna see something that's even more different, just to see what can come out of it.

You know this is never going to happen again. They got away with XY, they got away with SM, gen 8 is going to be skimpier than your mom.

I want gyms back but I want them to be restructured to something that makes more sense. Earning a rock-type badge should require use and mastery of rock types, not just stomping them into the ground with water or grass.

Totem battles were way more fun than almost every gym battle. Especially if you're playing without Exp Share, Refresh, etc.

Most of the time gyms were hard, it was because of flukes, or being too early in the game to have many options available to you, but Totems, man:

>Ally Pokemon that synergize well with the Totem

Lurantis and Mimikyu are far more memorable and challenging than any gym battle in the past two or three gens, which basically amount to exactly what you said, putting something SE up front and spamming Surf/Earthquake/Thunderbolt/other generic move until everything is dead.

Please bring back gyms for the sake of the anime. Without gyms the anime turns into filler comedy shit hell with almost zero battles, just look at the awful SM anime.

Trials seemed like less of a challenge than gyms most of the time. Fucking Lurantis and Mimikyu were bitches to kill and I love them for it.

What was the worst trial in your opinion? I'm tied between the Electric and Dragon ones.

Like remember when Team Rocket tried to be serious in BW for a while, only to go back to being goofy later in the same series? I feel like the same kind of thing is going to have to happen in SM when Ash realizes that he needs to travel to the different islands to continue his Trial campaign. He already took on the Normal Trial and defeated Hala, so it's not like he's just going to stop there, and it's not like the writers can just have all the remaining Trial Captains/Kahunas "just so happen" to visit Melemele and be prepared to issue their challenges to Ash right from the comfort of Pokemon School.

Right now it's establishing the side characters one by one, but it has a lot more significant side characters than past seasons have, and we'll work past that eventually. And considering Ash got the equivalent of a gym badge under his belt in less than ten episodes, this is a fairly normal pace for the anime from what I remember. Maybe even a little faster.

Basically, kys faggot Serenacuck, etc. The anime will be fine. Just be glad it's trying to change itself up a little instead of being the same dried up formulaic shit it's been for the past several years. This is the first time I'm actively watching since the first few episodes of BW bored me to tears, and before that, Johto back when I was a kid, and it attracted me because it's fresh.

Grass was in itself a pretty interesting trial, and had one of the two best Totems. Same for Ghost.

Water was cool just for the atmospheric build up (and Lana being a qt prankster), and Wishiwashi was decently tough at that stage of the game.

Fire was great for the memes, and my team chemistry had a particularly tough time with Salazzle.

Normal was cute because the Skull Grunts cooperated with you, but there wasn't really anything substantial, Totem fight included.

Electric was weak as fuck, except for the tie-in of the "Totem's here" music into the final question, and using Mudbray made Vikavolt too easy-mode.

Then dragon. Yeah.

Lurantis fight was supposed to be easy with Torracat but then it turns out castform does over half my health with headbutt. When I eventually get rid of that, trumbeak comes in and spams supersonic and bretty strong pluck.

And then there's mimikyu with hypnosis spam haunter/gengar which you can't outspeed because aslowla.

Those two things aren't really related. Ride Pokemon just exist as a new way to replace HMs and other key items. Your bike movement is unrestricted in gen 6, so a bike would have been perfectly feasible in gen 7 as well, but they just chose not to in favor of fleshing out Ride mechanics more.

Trials are still sanctioned-off areas where the trainer completes a task, just as gyms were, and Totems are tough battles with multiple Pokemon that await at the end of the task, just like gym leaders were. It's the same shit, only it just takes place outside instead of in a building in most cases, and you fight powerful but uncatchable wild Pokemon with allies and instant stat buffs instead of a straightforward trainer. They're not as drastically different as you perceive.

I only miss gyms because they made the cities and towns more memorable. Even though Kalos and Sinnoh are two of my least favorite regions, I can name the cities because I know which gyms are there.

In SM, I barely remember most of the cities because there's nothing to do in them. There's no sense of importance because the trials are outside of the towns.
