Nope. Gen 6 and 7 are actually decent games if you look at the game itself and don't compare it to other Pokemon games. Their graphics are quite acceptable, too. Story-wise it's a whole different issue, but I'd recommend everybody who played Gen 1 and got bored of subsequent generations to try at least Gen 5 and if they don't even like these games then they should just not play Pokemon anymore.
I for one enjoyed Gen 7 a lot, but I feel that if it continues in this direction there won't be many more generations that I'm going to play...

I agree, they aren't great, but terrible is an exaggeration. I would say Gen V, but that's just personal preference. The advantage of Gen I and II, perhaps even III is that the graphics are really slick and basic which works well for retro games and do generally age quite well. I don't know how S/M will fare once Pokemon moves to the Switch, but it might never be the same again (Gen I-III) in that sense.
