No, because they realized that making Red a npc was a mistake, and giving playable characters defined personalities(or lack of one to use Red as an example) teams goes against the nature and theme of the series.

BW2 was the ONE time they could have done it right, with the whole memory link thing to get around designing a team by just letting you import yours or a friends old team, but GF gonna GF and at the end f the day it still goes against the nature and theme of the series.

Ethan has a pretty good chance to be next. He was also the only choice in GS, so they have an excuse to make the female protagonist non-canon. Even still, unlike Leaf, Lyra can exist alongside Ethan. Add to that the fact that Ethan is likely still Kanto Champion, so if we return to Kanto, which we will eventually, he will be the final boss.
