It gives a Pokemon a new look, stats and ability. That's pretty much the same, just that it limits that to one per battle. Even if it means they'll never get a cross gen evolution, if they get a Mega, it isn't needed.

So why not make like Politoed and Gallade and just have an alternate final form then? Like, Cacturne is fucking bad, so why not just give Cacnea a different thing to evolve into that's a shitload better but does different stuff than Cacturne (maybe make it not a dark type)? Or, hell you could go farther than that. Let's say you want as better Dunsparce. First, make a baby Dunsparce, and then give the baby an alternate thing to evolve into so it has a choice to become something that isn't Dunsparce.

There's already precedent in Tyrogue and the Hitmons. Alolan forms and Megas can be retconned by EVs which also makes it more fun and replayable for kids who don't give a shit about them. Mewtwo can remain special snowflake by changing form via in game laboratory event or something

The negative reaction to many of gen 4's cross-gen evos, plus Gamefreak's need to switch it up to impress, made them move away from cross-gen evos. Every gen since 4 has put a different spin on older Pokemon without being outright evolutions:
