I always clone a Pokémon in the generation I got it before importing it to later generations to avoid shit like this. In Gen III, you don't even need external hardware/software to do it.

The game doesn't clearly indicate that Pokémon left as Isle Evelup will learn moves automatically, it assumes you are familiar with the previous day care mechanics where Pokémon left in there gained EXP as you walked.

Then there's Festival Plaza facilities like Rare Kitchen where Pokémon can gain one, seven or nine level ups at once, and these level ups never trigger moveset changes (or evolutions).

Game Freak's rules on levelling up aren't consistent.
