Even Lapras is more of a turtle than Shuckle. Shuckle doesn't even seem to be fixed into that rock shell the way a turtle is.

No, I think I can see what he's saying. He's not arguing that Shuckle actually is a turtle, he's saying that they kinda made him look like one to evoke the cute animal response.

Because, c'mon, he's a round shell with two limbs in the front, two in the back, and a long necked head sticking out the front. He DOES look like a turtle, which is why he still have this debate after all these years.

So, no, definitely not actually a turtle, but the guy's probably right that they took some turtle inspiration when designing him.

Personally, I think Shuckle is most likely based on multiple species of scale insects.

Pic related. Much like how Shuckle produces berry juice, Scale insects produce a liquid called honey dew which is a food source for many other insects like ants.

Shuckle is a tricky case since its inspiration(s) are somewhat debatable. Though it does appear most to be a scale inspect. They're immobile insects that suck plant juices and develope hard shells as a form of defense.

Still, shuckle's appearance is definitely that of a turtle.

I'd say Shuckle is a turtle in idea without actually being one, kind of like how Kricketune is only based on the idea of a cricket, when its body is definitely more of a violin beetle and shares no traits with a cricket other than being able to make noise with it limbs.

There was also an episode of river monsters where the guy pulled out some huge turtle with an insanely long neck that almost bit him. I can't remember what species that was, but i do know it was in Asia. I know common snappers and alligator snappers have deceptively long necks, but this thing's neck was snake like long, and it was a bigger species.
