It's not utter garbage, but it is unremarkable. Falls in the same power bracket as most other starters, where there's too many Pokémon better at its job. It's too rounded, and not necessarily well. Shame too, any number of minor fixes to moveset or stats would've helped it immensely. As it is, I still love it. Thematically and conceptually it works really well for me. Love me some owls, and the idea of it being a spectral, hidden ranger type really fits the nocturnal, camouflaged predator angle.

Smooth doesn't know what they're doing with it, though. It's ranked in the OU viability thread even though it's on the cusp at the bottom with Feraligatr, Hydreigon, Hawlucha, and others, but the thread for discussion was closed because it "isn't viable." Same mod locked the Minior thread because it "isn't good" even though it, too, is ranked. Both examples of lackluster but not totally useless. I don't get it.

Minior's a weird case; while it is threatening once it get Shell Smash going, it has lots of troubles even setting up. That, and Mega Metagross being everywhere doesn't do it any favors.

Accept that that most owl fans set their expectations too damn high and some still haven't come to terms with that fact.

Why would you increase its speed and make it another frail, speedy attacker? You know owls aren't fast fliers, right? Their feathers are adapted specifically for silent flying. Turning it into a speedy attacker doesn't suit it well.
It's not Talonflame, OP. I've always imagined Decidueye as being a Pokemon that takes advantage of its ability to attack at long range. Owls also have superb hearing and eyesight, which they use to their advantage to hunt prey through triangulation. Not really the types to chase prey down like other predators. They don't need to.

I can live with it not being Greninja levels of powerful. Decidueye still joined the ranks of my all-time favorites off concept alone, and I enjoyed playing through the game and using it as my main catcher to fill in the dex. I'll admit I'm sour about the tone-deaf missed opportunities (the fastest of the starter trio being that slow is sad, and the wasted Sp.Att hurts) that led to it's largely wasted potential, but it's still cool in my book.

I still want to get myself a shiny for comfy adventuring.

Not exactly. While UU (and other tiers IIRC) have already banned baton pass,the council's discussing what they're gonna do with it in OU; they can either ban the move or just allow "Dry Pass" (AKA baton pass with no boosts whatsoever.)

Fffffuuuuuuuck I remember when I thought it's HA would be Stakeout. That would've made perfect sense for flavor and given it a really unique trick combined with Spirit Shackle. In my wildest dreams they won't release the Alola starters with HAs this gen and the ability Long Reach gets swapped out when they do drop. Won't happen though, not least of all because it's a signature ability. Maybe at least move tutors or something will be kind to the owl and give it something nice.

Sp.Attack is the biggest offender for Decidueye's wasted potential. Switching that with HP, Defense, or Speed would be a noticeable step up.

Yeah, the lowe defense is a hole in its defenses.

It's actually kinda threatening for defensive mons. Just the fact that it can trap stuff with its main STAB move, which is spammable as hell, and whittle them down while outlasting with Roost is dangerous. It can be a dedicated trapper for some mons, especially when you use Curse.

Leech Seed immunity is nice too. It can remove Ferrothorn and Celesteela with a tailored EV spread. If anything, that'd be its niche in OU. I'm not sure how good of a Defogger it'd be.
