It was the MissingNo. Glitch before it was the Mew glitch. It was meant to max out the quanity of the 6th item slot, giving you over 100 rare candies, nuggets, TMs, or Master Balls.

I kinda wish it got converted to a Type: Null, and it was how you get extra ones.

But then again, Game Freak can make a billion-dollar series total shit with other boneheaded decisions, so there's no way one of them would consider or actually DO that.
