There was an exploit in XY's online allowing someone to make a tool that would read trade data.

Then someone felt for a proof of concept to apply this to reading your opponent's team and moves in battles. Needless to say people despised him for making that tool. Both that and the exploit allowing people to read trades, which was used to check eggs so people with certain ID/SIDs could hatch the egg to guarantee Shinyness, were patched.

Though in reality these were the same exploit. They didn't encrypt the online traffic. At least not well enough.
