There is an npc scientist in the game who says Prof Birch is his idol. If an alolan scientist idolizes Birch, Birch must have been to Alola at some point, possibly even during the main game.
Birch must be impressive for some reason if he's an idol. Wrestlers are often idols.
Finally, the player even recognizes the Masked Royal as a professor. Birch is a professor.

No, he thinks Sans is Ness because Toby Fox made the Undertale world look a LOT like the geography from Earthbound, and he also made a hack of Earthbound where Ness completely disappears after using the teleporter.
