just play it, turn off the exp share and choose set mode.

with the exp share off and only 5 pokemon instead of 6, I was very underleveled at the elite 4, and had a very hard time many times in the games, as in, would have lost without items to Kukui and Totem Lurantis.

There's no reason to continue playing. From where you stopped, there's only unrewarding tedium ahead.
