Make Zen mode >50% hp and it turns into standard form when below. Alternatively, give zen mode 1/16 hp/turn recovery and boost its defenses by like 20 each so if its base form does manage to survive at least the zen form will actually feel bulky.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as a Pokemon, is in fact, Zen Mode, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Zen Mode Darmanitan. Zen Mode is not a pokemon unto itself, but rather another forme of a fully functioning Pokemon made useless by the lowered speed, switched Atk/Spatk stats and >50% HP activation requirement comprising a complete failure as defined by literally everyone.

Many Smogon users run the base version of Darmanitan every day, without realizing it. Through a predictable turn of events, the version of Darmanitan which is widely used today is often called Darmanitan, and many of its users are not aware that it has a second, shittier forme.

There really is a Zen Mode, and there are people stupid enough to use it, but it is just a part of the Pokemon they use. Zen Mode is the forme: the variation in Darmintan that allocates the Darmitan's BST to the stat distribution of the Zen Mode. The Zen mode is a forme of a Darmanitan, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a completely retarded opponent. Zen mod is normally used in combination with sever autism: the whole system is basically Darmanitan with Zen added, or Darmanitan/Zen. All the so-called Zen Mode Darmanitan are really Darmanitan with Zen Mode!

Otherwise, Megas did that entirely fine since they don't have to gimp their ability-slot for a shit ability, though losing the Item-slot for for a Mega Evo is somewhat a way to balance it out.

its actually WAY better than Zen mode, because Zygardes form doesnt return to normal when its HP is over 50% again, making coil-rest sets extremly good (and annoying), while Darmanitan must keep its HP under 50% if it wants to stay in Zen mode
