What do you think of Kalosshipping? (game-Serena and Calem) It's overshadowed by Shaua in-game, who is much more obvious whereas Calem/Serena's feelings toward the player are more open for interpretation, and by anime-Serena clearly having feelings for Ash.

As another anon explained it to me, it's probably the shippers projecting themselves onto either character, since both of them are attractive, successful and strong enough trainers to become champions of their own region.

Personally I only like the ship as a platonic one, with both of them discussing their respective love interests while they rot in a jail cell together, condemned for their shota/lolicon tendencies.

Kalosshipping, on the other hand...pretty much what you say there...there's no super strong indication that Serena/Calem has romantic feelings towards you the player. It's friendly and all, but perhaps too much so in certain ways.

When I played R/S/E as a kid though, I definitely shipped my player character with May because of how enthusiastic she would always be about seeing him. However, I haven't played OR/AS, where May apparently blushes at the male PC quite a bit.

One of my favorite ships. While Shauna was meant to be Calem's waifu, it's pretty clear her role was overshadowed by Serena. Shauna is generally friendly towards everyone and you meet her with others the most, so it doesn't seem as explicit as the developers might've wanted it to be. Serena, though, is the one you meet alone the most, such as going to Cafe together in the beginning, and is the one you spend more time with. Her slowly going from calling you Neighbor to using the name also acts as a good indication of the friendship you build up. She starts out wanting to become a trainer, and by the end, you're pretty much her goal. While none of it is explicitly romantic, you have a much better connection with her compared to Shauna. What's more, even if you play as Serena, this ship survives, while Shauna's doesn't.

I also think they look the best together of all couples. Calem's white and blue theme goes really well with Serena's black and red, and they both look sexy rather than cute.

I'd actually agree with this. Shoving romance in the main plot is a bit heavy handed and can lead to weird happenings like the dropped Shauna romance plot. It can also be awkward when the protagonists are children. Plus you'd have to handle it properly and most of the time I'd say Pokemon plots aren't equipped to handle it.

I personally liked the way they handled Lillie. The story focused on her and MC's relationship, but it was mostly them doing some stuff together and some of it was cute, like her pretending to be like you. Nothing romantic, just simple character building with cute moments to get you invested in them. Then, towards the end, they throw some lines that could be taken as romantic. I thought it was a nice and simple way to go about it, but I doubt every game will a character like Lillie in the main story, so I'd go for some optional sidequest thingy, but with main characters. My biggest complain with Yancy was that you almost never actually see her. Needed a bigger role, or at least two scenes for her.

Or it could work the other way around, with sidequests being unlocked after dining with a character a certain amount of times.

I think that could be interesting to a degree, but it'd depend on execution, and if it had some sort of benefit or function in the game itself.

Maybe it's a character you could bring at Battle Frontier styled places, battle restaurants and Team hideouts to have double battles with (you bring 3, they bring 3), and their levels could be matched with yours, roughly (perhaps based on how many badges you have and if you've beat the Elite Four).

I don't think Gamefreak would be particularly explicit with it or use a racy term such as "girlfriend" or "boyfriend", perhaps just calling them a "partner" or "companion".
Thinking more about it, they'd probably water it down to the point that it's almost ambiguous and could just as well be looked at as a platonic friendship (which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, if people want things to be more open to interpretation).
