Yeah, they knew, but that wasn't a hint. That was nothing. It doesn't even correspond to a particular pokemon.

I had suspected that for ages since I played through xy, I'm just disappointed you get nothing from transferring it up to SM. As for actually seeing any notable hint of next games in SM, I haven't. The landscape in SM is barren, cities are small, and I didn't see any kind of weird item around. Maybe there's something hinting to next games in the library but I wouldn't remember.

After replaying Y, I noticed one of the things that backpacker says before giving you the souvenir is about their champion.

But XY takes place before SM, so Alola didn't have a champion yet.

well of course they knew GF are the devs, I'm sure they've had some designs both scrapped and usable and names in some pokemon "perfect works/bible" that has regions, pokemons, and characters that we won't see till gen 9 or ever.

My only problem with it is that they don't throw in enough world building lore into the games. We only know the names of regions they've actually shown and players still don't know what the pokemon planet looks like despite the series being around for over 20 years. The most we get is name drops for already known regions vague references to "other regions" for anything not shown in various games. But i guess that how they build hype in these types of games.
