In the end, the distinction doesn't even matter, since there's no difference between a sky battle and an ordinary battle aside from arbitrary Pokemon restriction. You could get into wild battles while soaring in ORAS and you were free to use any Pokemon you wanted, so there's really no point in ever bringing it back unless you actually made changes to the battle format itself.

Yes. These fights were annoying, and completely optional. If sky trainers gave, say, rare berries or items? Then they would have been a worthwhile challenge. "Fight this may have with a restricted team, get a prize". Could have worked the same with diver battles. "Challenge me with a swimming / aquatic-type pokemon, get a prize."

That would have had merit. As it was: you could bypass 100% of them and nothing would change.

There is though. It'd be like a psuedo-Monotype match, where you have to take into consideration that a lot of the Pokemon share similar advantages and weaknesses. I'd like to see it expanded more on: underwater battles, urban battles, poisonous terrain battles, etc., where each area gives advantages to different types and moves. It'd be interesting.
