the story varies from mediocre to cringey and awful, not just on tumblr levels but things like using 1337 speak and "haz".

Gameplay wise its pretty good, it adds a layer of complexity to battles (I think they overdid it a bit though) and gym leaders take some real effort and teambuilding to overcome.

Horrible story, but challenging (sometimes bordering on bullshit) mechanics. If you don't like limited mon selection, it won't be for you. Your starter will almost certainly be your best mon for a long time, particularly if you choose Froakie or Torchic since you can sr your starter for its hidden ability or Charmander for earlygame dragon rage cheesing.
