I think one of the swords actually fuses with the scabbard/shield, hence why the eyes on the shield open and close when Aegislash changes stances. Aegislash is one of the twins wielding the other, with Stance Change changing which one is in control.
I originally thought the same thing you posted, but Honedge splitting into two swords only to recombine into one sword again didn't make all that much sense to me.

No such thing imo. I would love it if we got more "pointless" ones, because it would mean getting to evolve it twice instead of once, it's more designs in the line for you to potentially like, and also to add to Middle Cup or other lower tiers for variety.
