Originally? Charmander to be sure. But I had to start and restart a million times because I wasn't allowed to save over my sister's file. I think I ended up using Bulbasaur when I finally got my own copy.

I later restarted the game and picked Squirtle instead my favorite kanto starter is now Bulbasaur though

Squartle. It evolved later than Bulbasaur and got better coverage than Charmander so I assumed it was the best. In gen 1, it probably was. Shame it's by far the worst of the 3 now.

Picked Charmander because I thought it looked kind of cool(liked bulbasaur too though), I had the red version, and I saw a friend battle with charizard. Then I figured out the whole "bulbasaur beats the first three gyms" thing and started over with that.
