Every important character was likeable in some way and the story was interesting. In SM only like 3 characters were acceptable, the rest were boring or annoying. If you can't even make your characters likeable or your story memorable then there's something wrong.

M3 definitely is better in that regard, in my opinion as a game as a whole too, but SM had some pretty amusing dialouge and characters.
