I don't mean battlewise. It's just that Flying is like nobody's favorite type, and it's mindlessly slapped on to things that fly, without mustering the effort required to make Flying have its own "elemental feel". Most of them are just birds. Would it be better if it was Air/Wind?

It definitely would be better if it wasn't just "this thing is also a bird" because we'd have flying types that aren't just birds
A lot of the pokemon I do tend to pick are quite often Flying type, though. Guess the whole HM Fly thing mostly affected this, but even in Sun/Moon, I got Yellow Oricorio regardless.
Although it'd be interesting to see more pokemon based on the air/wind elements, there's barely anything that goes beyond that.

We already have Flying types that are insects, bats, dragons, genies, pterosaurs, manta rays, fairies, balloons, meteoroids, rocket ships, or possessed fans.
I'm surprised we still don't have a pure Flying wind elemental that's just a cloud or a tornado, like Cryogonal is for Ice. Tornadus is too much of an organic lifeform.

Stuff like air sprites and whatnot. Not birds, but represent elemental air.
Or or slender, fast things, that obviously can't fly, but have that certain body type.

Most bugs have flying too.
I like flying as a type, drifblim yanmega altaria (a cloud that dragons) are some of my favourites and are not birds, I'm sure lots come to your mind too.
The elemental feel is not absent, though it's very poorly distributed.

but a lot of those things are just other things that happen to fly so they get flying type. it feels like an afterthought.
A lot of them are fucked.
Why is Twister Dragon and Whirlwind not? What is a special Rock/Steel move? Why is licking something a Ghost move? How does a physical Ghost move work?
It's a game and it has no real logic. Don't bother thinking about it. Using their reasoning I could just as easily make a Shit-type and a Penis-type just because.

We don't need a shit type, we have ice
Making the birds pure Flying from the get-go would have been nice, but being mixed with Normal may have been the reason why they made the type good against Fighting.
>>31517426
Y'know maybe that's why it feels like Flying doesn't have its own identity. Because for many years they were autisticly insistent that Flying pokémon MUST be dual typed, and they MUST have Flying as their secondary type.
In a way, that made it unique so it was pretty neat, but they didn't carry through with the idea. Which means it was ultimately pointless.
If all those Normal/Flying birds were pure Flying, it might feel like more of its own thing.

Ice was kind of in the same boat in the beginning but it didn't get held back by tradition.
