you can have the choice to be teleported at the last pokemon center or stay just before the trainer and try again if you have more pokemon,
but anyway it's just at the start of the game where trainer have only one.

we can also have the option to just limit that to special trainers (rivals, gym leaders, etc...)

I've done playthroughs where I only allow myself to bring as many Pokemon as the gym leader has to the battle. The downside is that I know ahead of time how many they have and what they are. It would be cool if leader/captain teams were random
