He was also the right mix of brash but with a bit of maturity. He loses his personality late Battle Frontier and then DP, but regains the AG flair by XY.

Literally none of them encapsulated what they apparently set out to do.

OS Ash was apparently meant to be a newbie who rides up the ranks and makes it to the challenge of challenges, but pretty much all of his Kanto badges were won by flukes, sheer luck and asspulls. Then he botched the League entirely. Then he did it all over again which sort of defeated the whole purpose, but at least used some skill in getting the badges, but then got fucked by a huge red-hot cock.
Advanced Ash was apparently meant to be an intermediate trainer who goes to an unfamiliar region using the experience he has from past regions, but he basically steamrolled through everything and at one point even won with another fluke, that being Wattson's Robo-Raikou supercharging Pikachu. The few times he didn't win something he barely even had any time to consider a lesson to be learned because he just went for a rematch and won it. The Battle Pyramid was basically the only difficult challenge for him. Before that he did even worse at the Hoenn League than at Johto and lost to a fucking Meowth. They clearly didn't have enough time to balance character growth for both Ash and May so they focused on May instead.
DP Ash was apparently meant to be a more experienced trainer who acts as a mentor to Dawn but he fucks up his first goddamn Gym battle, ends up trading Pokémon with Dawn, has difficulty teaching moves, raises a Chimchar deals with Blaze fuckery, enters Contests for no real reason, and at one point comes up with an excellent defense strategy only to never use it again and then have it stolen by both his Rival at the League AND Dawn for contests. Then he gets shit on by legendaries because fuck you.
I don't think I have to explain BW Ash.
XY Ash was clearly meant to look like an expert trainer but then he gets shit on by the first gym leader AGAIN among other things, fails so hard he loses confidence, only to get right back up...and then loses the League at the finals.

I didn't get back into it until black and white which was subtitled as it came out in japan. but i agree that the voice acting is bearable. More than i can say about diamond and pearl.
