It is a lynx, hence Shinx. The legendary lynx is known for having the ability to see through walls. Hence Luxray is from X-ray.

The problem is that lynxes are fairly unremarkable animals in appearance. They're just normal cats. So, with nothing interesting to go off but the lore, some designer got creative and just made something up.
