Just replayed BW2 a few months back and don't remember him being an asshole to anyone but Plasma folks, and he cools down after initially flipping out on the ex-Plasma guys.

And even if so, it makes sense for him to be friendly to the player character, since they're supposed to have been longtime friends, like Blue, Barry, Cheren, and Bianca are to the MC in their games.
