He judge the designs with more objectivity than most of the fans. The reviews aren't just "I like it because", he recognizes when a Pokémon is a good design even if that Pokémon is not in his favorites.

We still have monster like designs. Look at stuff like golisopod and araquanid. Hell they even took some great concepts and made them better in alolan form. I always liked muk as slime monster are cool to me but the alolan form made me love it.

I'm not really sure why people are praising him for being objective about designs. He pretty clearly has certain things he prefers in a design and things he doesn't, and he often gives things 5 star ratings because he likes the concept rather than the entire line having good execution.

And him acting like Trubbish and Garbodor are amazing flawless designs is stupid.

I have to ask though, are their any others like that? Shuckle is my favorite pokemon ever made, the idea that's its still debated nearly twenty years later what the fuck it is makes me love. However even stranger stuff seems to have some kind of clear inspiration. I think shuckle is more just really unique.

I think Shuckle's basis is debated so much because it looks just weird enough that it's not obvious, but also mundane enough that people don't immediately just think it's an entirely original creature.
Personally I lean towards the idea of it being a scale insect. I could easily imagine someone at Game Freak seeing something like pic related and abstracting it into Shuckle.

My first boxed starter run too actually. I was actually planningto just use decidueye however when I found out one of my new absolute favorites. dhelmise, was also grass/ghost I decided to box it. Owl is okay but I absolutely adore dhelmise.

That's just my general opinion on them. There's far more wrong with them. Like their general bad anatomy and proportions (yaoi sausage finger hands, noodle wings and paper flippers) or lack of thought and logic (wing bow that should basicly be a glorified slingshot, fire belt with lava dick and magical bubble hairbands that can just fall off when standing up and then just go back instantly). I honestly like the Gen 5 and 6 starters a lot more than these and Gen 5 and 6 weren't really the pinnacle of starters.

I'm not a big fan of them either. I don't inherently dislike the idea of an archer owl, a wrestler tiger or an opera singer sea lion, but I think the designs focus way too much on the archer, wrestler and opera singer aspects and not enough on the owl, tiger and sea lion aspects.
It really annoys me because I love Rowlet and especially Dartrix, and Decidueye might've made them all one of my favourite starter lines ever if they'd played down the archer theme and made it look more natural.

He's good at pointing out stuff that makes a design memorable/creative but sometimes it feels like he likes certain Mons just because they're "underdogs" or seen as hated by the average fan

I've found that he tends to be fair for the most part. There's popular Pokemon that have good design and there's popular Pokemon that have flawed designs. Smart goes for unpopular Pokemon.
