What is the most varied meta?

Gen 4, HG/SS/Pt.
Chomp is about the only cancer around, everything else is mostly very nice and varied. No perma weather aside from sand and hail, no bullshit HAs, and most legends were either so shitty you didn't bother using them, or they were kicked upstairs.

Garchomp was Ubers in Gen IV. I remember because there was a huge uproar at the idea that a non-legendary could be banned (besides Gen III Wobbuffet but that was an odd case anyway)

Ah, the good old days. When OU wasn't based on usage... How times have changed. A very healthy and balanced meta... and now.... It's gone. and it's not
>muh power creep
It's Smogon. The way they manage things... they're creating a pro stall environment.

Pretty much this. After the Outragers were gone, this was the best.

It was always based on usage.

I gotta agree. Gen V introduced too much. Abilities like Sheer Force, Prankster, Magic Bounce along with their wide distro (HA or not) which was very tough to counter. Furthermore, abilities like Speed Boost, Magic Guard, Shadow Tag and Mold Breaker became available to non-shitmon.
Baton Pass got too OP with Shell Smash, Quiver Dance, Bounce Espeon and Scolipede, whereas before only Ninjask could pass well, and it couldn't do much more outside passing unlike Scoli/Espeon.
They went too far in Gen 5, and went even further in Gen 6. Gen 7 tried to tone it down (Tapu/UB not withstanding) but that didn't magically undo the royal powercreep the previous two gens introduced.
