>It's early winter. A lone Charizard stalks the skies above a craggy mountain range, the sharp eyes of an aerial predator scan the land below for potential prey. She's recently become a mother and her single child, known as a Charmander, requires an intake of 20-30kg of food a day if it hopes to survive the winter. The Charmander waits back in its mother's den, a cave set high in a cliff-face among the tall mountains of the region. If Charmander wished to leave the den it would be faced with a hundred metre drop, certain death for the young hatchling who has yet to evolve the ability of flight. As such, he relies entirely on his mother for food as he stays in the freezing cave, huddling over the flickering flame that perpetually burns on the tip of its tail for warmth. A Charmander hatches with the flame already burning, and it will continue to burn throughout its life. Female Charizard nest in such treacherous conditions to make sure their young stay safe from other predators while they search for food.

>Charizard has spotted something. Down below a small herd of Tauros and Miltank are drinking at the edge of a large lake. While Miltank and Tauros differ so greatly so as to be considered seperate species, they are in fact the female and male counterparts of one another. Charizard is lucky. This herd has wondered far further north than they normally would have, especially at this time of year, and they offer plenty of food to last her and her hatchling for a week. Charizard swoops in immediately, hoping to catch her prey off guard as they are drinking. However, she is spotted almost instantly as her bright orange scales catch in the sun. The herd call in alert to one another and before long they have begun to scramble. Tauros are fast and immensely powerful. Posing a challenge even to Charizard. The bipedal Miltank, however, are far slower and their main means of defense - crushing foes under their immense weight - proves useless against attacks from above. Charizard is swift, she dives onto a particularly slow Miltank brandishing four sets of sharp claws which make short work of her victim. Charizard flicks her flaming tail as a warning to any Tauros brave enough to defend the fallen Miltank as she stands over its carcass. None dare challenge her, and before long the herd has retreated and behind a bushy outcrop.

>Charizard's victory doesn't last long, however. Before she can take off with her prize and begin the long flight back to her den and her hungry hatchling an unexpected roar from behind startles her. She tosses her head around in an attempt to locate the source of the bellow, surely there are no other Charizard for miles. A large Dragonite lands heavily a few metres away. Dragonites are distant relatives of the Charizard but are much larger, weighing almost three times as much as their smaller cousins. Not only that, but they are capable of spitting dragonfire which burns much hotter than the regular natural fire-breath of the Charizard. It is unknown if the Charizard once breathed dragonfire and lost the ability or if they developed their own fire-breathing technique to mimic that of the dragons. Unlike Charizard, Dragonites young are almost fully aquatic for the first two evolutionary stages of their life. This particular Dragonite must have young, known as Dratini, beneath the surface of this lake. The Dragonite will defend the lake with unmatched ferocity untill the Dratini evolves into a Dragonair and can defend itself.

>The Dragonite roars again. It's Charizard's last warning. If she stays she will have to fight and - almost certainly - lose but if she leaves she will have to give up her dinner. Before she has a chance to decide, Dragonite launches at her. Somehow its small wings easily carry its immense weight and it moves almost too quick for Charizard but she manages dodge the attack at the last second before unleashing a plume of crimson flames from her throat. The flames engulf the Dragonite, but its scales are thick and strong and it sustains almost no damage from the attack. It inhales and releases its own blue flames. Again, Charizard ducks out of harms way just in time. She has realised how outmatched she is in this brawl and decides to take her opportunity to flee. With several flaps of her powerful wings Charizard takes flight once more and speeds away from the lake as fast as she can. Her foe remains on its shores, victorious in fending off the trespasser and earning itself an easy meal.

>The sun is beginning to set behind the mountains and Charizard has failed in her hunt for the day. She returns to her den empty handed. Charmander is excited to see his mother at first, but excitement turns to dismay as he realises the promise of food has not been fulfilled for the day. Tomorrow, Charizard will try again, and hopefully be more successful. Charmander needs a steady diet throughout the winter months if it wishes to survive and be strong enough for spring, when its mother will finally take it down to the woods where it will be introduced to the wild for the first time. As soon as a mother Charizard has let her hatchling go she will abandon it fully and spend spring travelling far away in search of a new mate. A Charmander who is strong when it is abandoned will soon evolve into the more formidable Charmeleon, giving it a much higher chance at survival. However, if Charmander doesn't get enough food over the winter, it might lack to strength to evolve, and by extension, survive. Once it has reached the Charmeleon stage, the hatchling will have a much easier time hunting for itself and if it survives long enough it may even live to become a Charizard like its parents. Finally sprouting wings of its own.
