Pokemon design wise I'm happy staying around Gen III. Sinnoh evos were a mistake. Gliscor ruined my bro's line. And Unova had a neat idea of starting another region from scratch without having to withstand Zubats and Geodudes again but the execution was bad. Probably the ugliest generation.

But gameplay wise this image is very accurate. World Championship from BW2 was the best thing that's happened to the franchise. The reason why they removed it is beyond me.

Most people don't care about that stuff which is why Gamefreak also didn't bring back the battle frontier. Their modern design outlook fucking sucks.

People mock the old Sugimori style of simple shapes and triangle eyes but at least it gave consistency to what a Pokemon visually was. The last four or so generations look more like Spectrobes or Yokai Watch shit. I'm all up for updating an IP but geez, they sure did it the bad way
