They had no reason to keep Ash. It would have not negatively affected the games. I dare say it could have boosted it better than what they are doing now. People remember fondly of Yugi and Ash could have been up there with him.

Switching protagonist almost always leads to a huge drop in ratings. All those shows you mentioned had a huge drop. There's literally no reason to switch out Ash. It's a very unnecessary risk. Ash and Pikachu both together and individually has a huge recognition and is an extremely valuable marketing tool. Switching them out after 20 years to spend a lot of time and money to create a new protagonist that will never ever even be close to having the same value as Ash from a marketing perspective is nothing but retarded.

Next time think before you write underage.

It's funny because there were countless ways for them to avoid making Ash win the league while still making it clear he had surpassed Alan, such as him passing out at the last second or the match getting interrupted, but they had to shoehorn in an outright loss despite that making zero sense from a narrative perspective. It's clear the original plan was for Ash to win, so that's what's the canon outcome is no matter if they weren't allowed to broadcast it.

I'm past being mad about the loss, but the loss basically spells death for hope of Ash ever being anything more than runner up. They can't just have him win the Alola "league" because it'll be an obvious cop out, and they can't have another XYZ unless they pull the "Ash being at his peak" thing for 2 more seasons. Ash losing Kalos just signals to the viewers that regardless of what the fans want, if the higher ups don't want Ash to win, he won't, and they never want him to win.
I'm loving the SM anime, it's fun to watch and very entertaining, but I have zero faith in Ash ever becoming an effective, high level trainer in the future.

It was the worst writing possible.As bad as it would have been, I would have preferred some bs like Ash fainting because he couldn't handle the transformation strain, or Flare interrupting the battle, but no, Ash loses clean and the entire season of Ash preparing for his ultimate battle was for nothing. To make it worse they also foreshadowed Alain joining Flare, which would have allowed Ash to get his win on a much more important stage with the fate of Kalos on the line. Instead Alain ends up saving Ash and then leaves with his loli.
