At the beginning she was more and less shy, timid and very affraid of taking new risks in her life. Also, she had no objetive in her life until the point of meeting ash.
In the whole series, admit it or not, she has a good develoment as a character. She found an objetive to accomplish and a dream to follow, all that stuff mixed with her obvious love for ash.
So at the end we have the same "cute" (don't have another word to describe) female character who grew up and got very independent of herlself and that might be the reason despite of the amourshipping why people love her a lot. (not everyone but well..)

What do you mean by "long-term significance"? If you mean that it's not really going to play a role in future seasons' plots, then yeah, but that just makes it all the more perplexing that so many westerners are trying to deny that what the director actually matters. It reeks of desperation.

This isn't a series that where one season's director just decides to obliterate what happened in previous seasons anyway. The future director of generation 8 won't be able to go back and just revert something that happened in Sinnoh just because he/she feels like it, for instance. This is a team effort, and anything that's going to totally change something from past seasons would have to be approved by the executive director, who isn't going to want to reverse something like this anyway.
