As someone who watched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I'd say it aged pretty well. The animation isn't that amazing by today's standards, but the cinematography and sound design are still fantastic. They really help in building an overwhelming sense of dread at times.

"Age horribly" isn't really the right term. It's one of those things that was so damn influential that you've probably already seen most of its then-unique elements in later anime (and often done better), so it feels a bit generic. It's still enjoyable if you go into it with that mindset.

In a technical sense it's aged like a cancer patient, but the story, themes, and message are pretty good. The music is fucking great, too. I watched it at a certain part in my life where I really needed to see it and End, though.

It still holds up to this day. It's not the animation, which granted was pretty damn good, but everything from the atmosphere to the fleshed out characters. It's a one of a kind japanese asian animuh.

Not the most fanservicey thing aside from two particular scenes with Rei and Misato, even then those scenes aren't that gratuitous at all.

Some parts of the story have deeper level of thought put into them, and there are themes to the narrative. However, it's also got tons of "the curtains are blue" moments, such as the monsters being called angels.

Pretty much nobody in NGE is very likable outside of their designs, and this is pretty much intentional.

NGE is probably the best gateway drug into anime but beyond that your mileage may vary. It wasn't my first anime or even one of my earlier ones, but I like it.
