what would have better for Alola is doing it like the Orange Isles in the anime.

just make gym competitions based around 3 disciplines. last one is always a battle.

No, trials are great in concept and they actually give some depth to the captain characters, instead of just the usual crossing a few words with some random ass gym leader who adds nothing to the story. But some trials could have been better for sure
