I admire creatively "re-interpreting" pokemon as real animals, even though it seems a little forced sometimes.

A lot of people think Giratina looks kind of bug-like, from what I've seen. It's one of the more awkward-looking ones, to be sure. I think as for Lugia he just wanted an excuse to get its "back-spikes" on it without making it awkward. As for Scyther, it already has some reptile qualities and making it an actual mantis would probably be weirder.

Can't really defend Gengar even though I like it more now considering the nerf.

I don't think so, the charm of the art style is a big part of what makes the franchise popular and Arvalis goes out of his way to erase it wherever possible.

I totally get what you mean but the idea of "realistic pokemon" kind of already guarantees that you're not going to get the same artstyle with shifts in proportions, colours, etc. Unlike most of the stuff ITT he uses "realistic" textures and kind of uses the jarring contrast/derpiness towards his style (whereas other artists would try to avoid that kind of thing). It's a little more indulgent than most others, I think, but that's really the kind of thing I'm looking for when I think of realistic pokemon.

Not only does Espeon not even look like a sphynx cat, but even actual Sphynx cats aren't this ugly.

I think he enjoys making "edgy/ugly" stuff. It's really hard to do things like Gyarados and avoid making it like that.
That Espeon is definitely one of the more exaggerated ones but I kind of dig it - Espeon comes off as more of a creepy, mystic thing. The weird third eye and the crooked ears help. A lot of the more "ordinary" looking ones are less jarring bar a few weird proportions - Leafeon looks kind of dirty with grass growing all over it but it's also endearing. Glaceon also looks adorable if you ignore the weird angle of its body and the possible veins growing into hits hat-thing. Also, Vaporeon looks surprisingly okay and I even like the body texture that makes it look like there's some kind of watery nebula inside of it. You could've definitely made a fox-fish-thing a lot grosser/uglier.

i used to like more of arvalis works but he has some really questionable designs. lugia is supposed to be a beluga, and kyogre an orca, it's in their names yet he went out of the way to make them a turtle and a giant lizard-thing, for whatever reason.

pretty much all of his ghost types are also wonky af and his decision to make some dragons giant dinobirds but the rest actual giant lizards just throws me off.

stuff like charizard or even dragonite (regardless of how ugly it looks) are fine, they make some anatomical sense, while being true to their original concepts with obv. the artistic liberties required for the task.

but really, what the fuck with his ghost types and what the fuck is this shit even.

flareon has a lot of unnecessary coloration and weird front-biased proportions that just make it look wrong, on top of that it just looks dirty
jolteon even more so especially with that weird eye shit and those retardedly bony legs
eevee has the same proprtion and coloration issues issues as flareon and the tail should have been bushier, the face also looks too much like a rodent

Jesus, any time I see one of these threads I know its an arvalis bitchfight before I even click on it.

Even if you don't like the guys work, at least its not the same old cartoon-with-realistic-texture BS. It's a unique interpretation. Even if he has a few designs you really hate (ice spider, dino scyther, bug giratina) he's done hundreds of the fuckers. Go look at some of the other ones. His starters are all pretty badass.

Or, better yet, if ugly espeon ruffles you so bad, just go look at the thousands of other drawings of cute and pretty espeon. One ugly espeon isn't the end of the world. It isn't detracting in any way from your own interpretation.

The dude inspires a lot of people to draw more. I've seen them say it to him at conventions. He's a good dude.
