a much better idea would be to reuse the region but some years later, give it a bunch of changes (beyond the B2W2 level), give it an entirely different story and different pokemon because (insert some plot rationalization here). I think the number 1 reason people want remakes is just the region. characters a distant second

they could even package multiple regions in one game, and not do a shitty job of it this time. something like a johto+kanto game, completely different plot that spans both revamped regions. or johto+sinnoh or any combination

but game freak loves their conventions too much to do anything like this

They kinda did, about 18 fucking years ago in GS. Replaced Gym Leaders, closed off areas and replaced areas like Pokemon Tower. At the time, that was all they could do, on GBC.
