It's Gen V. Good music to begin with, and the contextual changes (while walking, different seasons, talking to people to add instruments) makes it really interesting. Cool things like the unique gym themes in B/W2 and the PWT remakes of every past gym leader and champion theme really put it over the top.

Meh. I just don't like the 3ds overall Pokemon soundtracks. There are a few songs very cool (can't name them because my games aren't in English) but many songs (routes specially) irritates me after a while.

I'm listening now to Sun Moon soundtrack and there are a lot of song I missed or didn't care when I was playing that are amazing, but again, fuck the routes songs

Melemele Island has its own leitmotif, which goes across most of its songs.
Other islands sadly didn't get their own so I can get you on that.

SM had a good soundtrack, it's just criminally underutilized.
>The Skull Admin theme is used TWICE, and it's against the same person each time. Same complaint with the Skull Leader theme, although that gets used 3 times.
>Hau's theme and Gladion's theme aren't used for their Champion Defense battles.
>The E4 theme doesn't feel like an E4 theme and feels more like an urgent boss fight.
>Every remix in the game except for Red/Green's theme is mediocre, and Red's theme has that strong ass string section carrying it between mediocre bouts of something that sounds like it was one of Kalos' sloppy seconds.
>Champion theme might be the worst to date, literally just being a remix of the title theme that we've been hearing for 20 years, and not even a particularly good one.

XY did some of these tracks much better. The E4 theme from XY is one of the better ones in the series, and the Champion theme is nice, with the only real flaw being that the Champ herself is a pushover and will rarely let you hear the song loop more than once or twice.

Plat's still got the best overworld music, though. I still find myself humming the bike theme a decade later.

I just found amazing tracks in Sun Moon and was like "Where was this played?" Gladion theme is amazing, Battle royal dome too but the game doesn't make justice to its music. Even the town or cities themes are cut off if you ride the Tauros.

In the other hand, I would take a trip to Sinnoh anyday just the hear its music.

SM's soundtrack is also over-reliant on recycling motifs and the same instrumentations. Too many of the tracks have too blatant of a "tropical/Hawaii"-type of feel, with the ukulele and such.

I legit thought that I was the only one upset by this! They did such a good job with making Melemele thematically distinct but then they just gave up for the other three. In retrospect, that explains why I don't remember shit about the rest of the islands

I'm impressed with how they did the same thing with the Aether Foundation though

Still Johto. Unova and Hoenn are great too. Kanto has lots of iconic themes. Sinnoh, Kalos, and Alola are all similarly hit-or-miss but at least Sinnoh is the most ambitious with the day/night variants.

For example, while it's not actually something I would listen to on repeat, I like the Thrifty megamart track just because the filters and the slightly muffled sound gets across the feeling of being in a cheap megamart chain playing elevator music really well.

Lusamine's riff is also one of my favourite reoccuring elements in all the tracks that feature her, as it's such a strong element and I think it's interesting that in the theme of the battle against her motherbeast form, it's not as prevalent.

Lillie's theme is also a reoccuring theme in a lot of tracks, and I didn't even notice until listening to the soundtrack.

Even though it's really short, I really like this track for incorporating both Lusamine and Lillie's musical leitmotifs (Lusamine in the beginning and the bells at the end play the beginning notes of Lillie's theme)

I feel like the soundtrack was done incredibly well for half of it, then the rest feels like it was done for the sake of having something. Pretty much all the non-melemele route themes feels like that to me
