HGSS are the most complete Pokemon experience IMO. They capture the essence of Pokemon quite well while providing a lot of content. They include just about everything iconic about the series. Plus they're comfy as fuck.

While I'm a huge Johtofag I must say that the horrible level curve alone breaks it. Platinum did everything I loved about gen2, but more competitive gameplay in mind.

Nevertheless I would not use Red as an argument since you can have overleveled boss fight even in a game with otherwise gradually progressing levels.

Along with it being the first game with moving sprites, actually having a decent story (no I'm not memeing) and having a bunch of cool concepts like seasons and responsive open world music. Despite what's been said about it, I also like the wheel-like structure of Unova.
