Honestly, I must say I can't really prove you wrong either way. Protean plus good stat distribution and movepool means it really is statistically the best starter possible.

Therefore, I wish to hijack this thread and ask: how would we bring other starters to up to Greninja's level?

I had ideas for chesnaut and delphox, but I felt they went too far. But for the sake of discussion, i'll throw them up:

Protean was an already existing ability, though. I think it'd be more challenging if the starters were made good without special snowflake abilities.

Giving Delphox Magic Guard would've been good. It fits thematically, gives an immunity to Stealth Rocks, and negates Life Orb recoil. Also, give her Thunderbolt and Ice Beam. Sure, Ice Beam on a Fire type is weird, but she's a mage, so it makes sense.

As for Chesnaught, either Multiscale or Stamina would fit the tanky class, or Rock Head would fit the juggernaut class. As for moves, he's got a pretty solid movepool for a Grass type. Maybe Shell Smash would be fitting (warrior takes off his armor and goes berserk), if not a little OP.
